THANKFUL THURSDAY...missions

Today is THANKFUL THURSDAY. Oh how the list can go on and on for the things that I am thankful for! Every October in our church we host a "Missions Convention" and we are right dab in the middle of our 2008 missions celebration!

Today, as I join IRIS and all of the other Thankful Thursday participants, I would like to give thanks for MISSIONS.

2 PETER 3:9 "The Lord is not slow in keeping His promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance."

This scripture is the heartbeat of every Missionary! To bring the Good News to all those who otherwise would not hear it. Why else would they:

  • go to a foreign land.
  • give up the conveniences of what the states offer. (such as running water, electricity, Oreo cookies, coca cola, and ICE!)
  • leave behind family and friends.
  • live without decent health care.
  • eat things that are still moving.
  • go to a place that is dangerous.

Missions should not only be the heartbeat of those who have answered the call to GO but it should also be the heartbeat of those of us who are able to SEND!

Not all of us can go to foreign land for an extended period of time. But many of us can participate in missions in other tangible ways.

One way is to participate in a missions trip. If you have never been on a missions trip before, talk to your Pastor to see if your church can participate in one. Missionaries could not build new churches, and Bible Schools without MAPS teams. These are churches from the states who send teams to assist Missionaries in projects for a week or two weeks. I have had the privilege of going on 3 trips such as this. They are life changing!

This is me on a missions trip to Ecuador. We moved piles of brick from one place to another!
In Ecuador, we worked on building the first christian campground, this is me showing the locals that women can move some dirt!!!
Clayton and I posing with the grounds family outside their home located on the campground site. Even though we could not speak much of their language, they were precious and we felt God's love in them!

Another way you can participate in missions is giving money. Face it, Missionaries could not do what they do without our money. I have found that in some of these countries just the basic needs of construction are far more expensive than what we find in the US. Hired labor is expensive. Construction tools are expensive and limited. Giving of our finances is one way that we can partner with Missionaries.

One of the most important ways we can partner in missions is by praying! On more than one occasion I have heard testimonies from missionaries how they were in dire need in the middle of the night; their child was deathly ill with no medicine available; their vehicle had been stopped by the authorities and they were being detained on bogus charges, etc. It was the prayers of prayer warriors back in the states that carried them thru their crisis. The urgency felt in their spirit to pray, only later to find out that at that very moment the missionary was in need! We are partnering with our Missionaries when we pray for them.

During our Missions Convention at our local church, we will have Missionaries speak to us who represent Asia, Guatemala, Equatorial Guinea, The Netherlands, and Honduras. Reaching out to the lost is the heartbeat of these Missionaries as they preach and teach on foreign soil.

Who is willing to GO and preach and teach the gospel to those in the US?

~In your state? ~In your town? ~ At your work? ~In your neighborhood?

LUKE 10:2 "The harvest truly is great, but the laborers are few; therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest."

AREN'T YOU THANKFUL FOR THE MISSION FIELD?

HAVE YOU ANSWERED THE CALL TO "GO"?

WEDNESDAY'S WEEKLY WORD..."Feeling Frenzy"

In last week's
YOUR OPINION MATTERS POLL,
I polled the readers on the following,
"What describes the emotion you are feeling now?"

The top 3 responses were:

52% of those polled said they were CONTENT.
21% of the readers felt FRUSTRATED.
10% voted and said they were DEPRESSED.

EMOTIONS ARE POWERFUL!

  • DEPRESSION can paralyze us...
  • LAUGHTER can lift us up...
  • JOY takes us to new heights...

In the original STAR TREK series, Mr. Spock tried to learn the mystery of human emotions. He found out that emotions can make us great, but at the same time weak.

~Joy adds energy, while depression saps us!

~Hope motivates, while sadness deflates us!

Most of what we do, we do because of emotion! We all experience different kinds of emotion!

DAVID experienced different types of emotion. In fact, he was frequently depressed and he wrote many of the psalms during periods of stress.

PSALM 6:6-7 "I am weary from my groaning; with tears I dampen my pillow and drench my bed every night. My eyes are swollen from grief; they grow old because of all my enemies."

When David was in exile in the desert running from Saul and later running from his own Son, Absalom, David was alone in his grief. He did not have his best friend (Jonathan) with him to be an encouragement. David prayed, and God kept his grief from overwhelming him. When David prayed he was able to see hope in God.

While it is true that David experienced depression, he also experienced joy!

PSALM 21:1-3 "The king shall have your joy in Your strength, O Lord; and in Your salvation how greatly shall he rejoice! (2) You have given him his heart's desire, and have not withheld the request of his lips. (Selah) (3) For You meet him with the blessings of goodness; You set a crown of pure gold upon his head."

David was strengthened thru the expression of his joy. JOY is what people are seeking. They seek joy in their relationships. They seek joy in their career choices. They seek joy in life!

EMPATHY...People are looking for empathy whether they realize it or not.

ROMANS 12:15 "Rejoice with those who rejoice; weep with those who weep."

Empathy is the ability to understand someone else's grief or share in their joy. If we want to be the kind of Christian that helps others, we need to understand emotions.

A "Don't worry, be happy" philosophy is not adequate enough for us to take. True encouragement comes from two sources: empathy and hope. In my study of Proverbs, I learned three things about emotions:

1. EMOTION IS HIDDEN...

It may be difficult to share empathy with someone if they keep their emotions hidden. Solomon reminds us of this: "Even in laughter a heart may be sad" (Prov. 14:13). People may hide their emotions for different reasons. One reason may be that they do not want people to know about a problem in their life. Another reason may be that they do not like to show emotion in front of others.

How can you help people when they hide emotions?.... Be a good friend and build trust in your relationship.

2. EMOTIONS CHANGE LIKE THE WIND...

Emotions cannot be the basis of our lives and actions. Just like the wind changes course, so does the circumstances in our lives. Feelings such as joy should not be dependent on our circumstances. Solomon warned us, "Joy may end in grief" (14:13), emotions usually are a result of circumstances but what a blessing to know that God does not change even when our circumstances do!

3. EMOTIONS ARE INFLUENTIAL...

Depression, grief and hopelessness will rot the bones, break the spirit and make it difficult to survive. Stress can cause heart problems and shorten our life. Depression can weaken our immune system. Physical effects of emotion are real and have been medically proven.

There is a much better way to cope with the changing winds of emotion. The hope that joy brings will affect us not only spiritually but physically ~

~It makes our faces glad!~ PROVERBS 15:13 "A merry heart makes a cheerful countenance, but by sorrow of the heart the spirit is broken."

~It gives health to our bodies!~PROVERBS 14:30 "A sound heart is life to the body, but envy is rottenness to the bones."

~It strengthens our bones!~ PROVERBS 15:30 "The light of the eyes rejoices the heart, and a good report makes the bones healthy."

~It sustains us when we are sick!~PROVERBS 18:14 "The spirit of a man will sustain him in sickness. but who can bear a broken spirit?"

If you are seeking to have more strength in your emotions, strive to keep your emotions healthy and seek to help others who are hurting. To balance out your emotions, you may try keeping a emotional journal. Keep track of your different emotions, who you are with at the time you experience these emotions and if circumstances have triggered your emotion. Ask God to help you to walk in His power when circumstances change, and walk in the joy of the Lord!

I have been studying the book of PROVERBS, it is my prayer that this week's devotion will encourage you in Gods Word. I will conclude this study next week and begin a in depth study of the book of Colossians. Won't you join me by taking a closer look at Gods Word?

A PIECE OF MY HEART...parchment leads us to the well

PARCHMENT...
It starts with dry lips!
Your tongue feels swollen!
You feel light headed!

PSALM 63:1 "O God, You are my God, earnestly I seek You; my soul thirsts for you, my body longs for you, in a dry and weary land where there is no water."

We have all been so parched that the only thing that would quench our thirst was a tall glass of ice cold water! Parchment is not only a feeling we get when we are thirsty in our body. But, sometimes weariness of life will parch our soul. Every footstep throughout our day feels increasingly heavy and difficult. It may be from circumstances or regretted choices. The Samaritan woman might have felt this way as she traveled to the well....

THE WELL SAT OUTSIDE OF THE TOWN OF SYCHAR IN SAMARIA...

  • Though there were water resources available nearer, it was better to get her water farther away.
  • It was also better to retrieve the water when the sun was high in the sky.
  • The other Samaritan women would not be fetching their water at that time.
  • No one would be around to sneer at her or whisper behind her back.
  • No one would be found to be saying things like, "That's that wretched woman who has had many husbands, stay away from her."
As the woman worked her way along the road, she might have passed by twelve Jewish men who were traveling toward town to purchase the supplies for the day.

~She would not speak to them~
~They would NEVER speak to her because she was a Samaritan~

Jews had a long-standing feud with the Samaritans, seeing them as a mixed breed, cursed, and not fit to live. Just being a woman, the men might avoid her - especially her.

JESUS SAT AT THE SIDE OF THE WELL WAITING...
  • He would be there until the disciples returned with their purchases.
  • But, before they came back, He would be there for the Samaritan woman.
  • She arrived carrying her empty water pot...she noticed the stranger.
  • It was another Jew - sitting by the well.
  • She would get her water and leave quickly.
"Could I have a drink?" - He asked.

Startled, she turned to Him, "You are a Jew. Why is it that you are asking me, a Samaritan woman, for a drink? Jews do not have anything to do with Samaritans."

Instead of reacting to her defensive reply, with compassion He told her something even more amazing...

"If you understand the gift of God, and Who it is Who is asking you for water, you would have asked Him for living water."

The Samaritan woman would soon find out that this man who waited at the well for her, knew everything there was to know about her. He knew every detail, every hurt and every mistake.

Jesus knows YOU as well as He knew the Samaritan woman. He knows your frustration. He knows your loneliness. He knows your deepest sorrow.

Day by day, you have sat by your well of hurts and disappointments. The living water that was offered to the woman at the well is available to us today. This living water is what will quench the parchment that you feel in your spirit. It will wash away all of the regrets and bad memories - forever!

You can walk away from your well today seeing yourself as God sees you...beautiful, loved and forgiven!

MATTHEW 5:6
"Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for
righteousness, for they shall be filled."

Now that's a piece of my heart today!

AT THE WELL...keeping the home

CHELSEY is leading us in the discussion of "keeping the home "over AT THE WELL today. Chelsey is stepping on our toes here this week. No doubt the discussion will be varied and interesting as we all share our take on keeping order in our homes. Come check out what everyone has to say about this topic, click HERE!

THE DISCUSSION...

do you keep a neat and tidy home? ~If so, what do you do to keep on top of this? Schedules? Routines?

If you have children at home, do they get involved?

If you are lacking in this area, why do you think that is?

Give any practical hints or advice that work well in your home and that might could bless someone else! :)

YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

I am the worse critic when it comes to asking myself if I keep our home neat and tidy. First of all, for you readers that do not know me personally, there are two things you must know about me.
  1. I own my own business...yep, you guessed it right ... a CLEANING SERVICE business!
  2. I have been typically described as a OCD person ...that is over compulsive disorder!
So when it comes to cleaning - let's just say...I could do it 24/7 and it would never be clean enough! (I know - I'm working on letting up alittle on this ...)

You would not find my home "spotless", but you would find me working like a busy little bee trying to get it all organized and clean to my satisfaction. When I go on one of my little cleaning spells, my kids will say to me, "Whose coming over?" (why does someone have to come over in order to have it clean I ask??)

ROUTINES, SCHEDULES?
The only routine and schedule we have at our house is DO IT everyday! That thought may seem like a dream come true for all of you clean freaks like me. But face it, life happens. We get busy.

ballgames...meetings...school projects...weekend retreats...overtime at work

If we could only eliminate all of the distractions....I believe that we could all have impeccable homes. If we lack in the area of good housekeeping, most likely one of the reasons is distractions!

In the book of Luke, we see another woman who was distracted by many things...Martha!

LUKE 10:38-40 "Now it happened as they went that He entered a certain village; and a certain woman named Martha welcomed Him into her house. (39) And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus' feet and heard His word. (40) But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she approached Him and said, "Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her to help me."

I am very much like Martha! Because I am a detail/detail/detail person! Did I mention how important details are to me?

ORGANIZATION...now this is an important characteristic to have, because I do not think that Christians should be in total chaos or disorder. But being consumed with details, such as Martha was, can mean that important things will be missed. In this case, Martha missed out on spending time with Jesus...

LUKE 10:41-43 " And Jesus answered and said to her, 'Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. (42) But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her."

When I read this passage, I had to look twice, I thought for sure my NIV said "Laurie, Laurie, you are worried and troubled about many things!"

ARE YOU LIKE MARTHA...and miss out on important things?

Since I am my worse critic, I decided to have my family critique me in this area of keeping the house in order. I wanted to be sure I was not missing out on "important things". Here are some of their responses:

  1. "It is not solely your responsibility to clean the house"
  2. "Sometimes I wish you would practice ball with me instead of cleaning"
  3. "On a scale of 1-10, you score a 1000"
  4. "Being a nurturer ...which you are (physically and spiritually) is more important than having a clean house"
It is so easy to be like Martha and miss out. I believe there is nothing wrong with being like Martha (aka... Laurie) but there are steps I believe that can be taken to make sure important things remain important...

a. PREPARATION...I believe Martha could have enjoyed more of Jesus like her sister if she had initiated some preparation. Prepared the meal before hand...even simplifying it.

What preparations do you initiate in your home?

  • Do you plan your meals ahead of time...
  • Do you lay out clothes the night before...
  • Pack lunches the night before...
  • Do you have a chore list that everyone can help with weekly...

b. PRIORITIZE...Martha could have been sitting at Jesus' feet as well if she would have made priorities. If Jesus' was at my table...I would most definitely want to roll out the prime rib and the best cheese cake ... would He be impressed with this or impressed that I took time for Him?

What are your priorities in your home?
  • Do you spend enough time with the kids?
  • Do you make special time for your hubby?
  • Do you make unfulfilled promises..."I'll help you when I'm done with the laundry."
  • Are you a good "time manager" in your home...do you do household chores before getting on the computer, is the laundry done before you turn the tv on, are the beds made before you play solitaire on your laptop?
Our homes should be a "safe haven" for our families. I believe that our homes should be orderly, organized and clean. This would take away so much stress that families may feel. Stress of "I can't find my shoes Mom!!!" "I have to leave in five minutes and I can't find my keys!" If you are a woman who is feeling overwhelmed in this area of keeping your home clean - you may want to initiate some help...if your family will not help then consider budgeting a cleaning service.

PSALM 51:10 "Create in me a clean heart, O god, and renew a steadfast spirit within me."
  • The kids will grow....
  • the ball practices will end...
  • the chaos will slow down...
When I polled my family in regard to my role as keeping order in the house ...One of my son's answers really ministered to my heart. His answer says it best when it comes to what is most important, and what will be remembered most...

"Nurturing us physically and spiritually is more important than having a clean house".

HOW CLEAN IS YOUR HOUSE?

THANKFUL THURSDAY...the family of God

DO YOU TAKE THE FAMILY OF GOD FOR GRANTED?

WHAT DEFINES THE FAMILY OF GOD TO ME? anybody who has encouraged and blessed me with their godly leadership, their godly friendship and their godly wisdom. So today I am giving thanks for to ALL of you who represent my family of God!

  • A SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHER
  • A PASTOR
  • A BIBLE STUDY LEADER
  • A PRAYING NEIGHBOR
  • A CHRISTIAN FRIEND
  • A GODLY MENTOR
  • MY PRAYER PARTNERS

MATTHEW 12:50 " Whoever does the will of My Father in heaven is My brother and sister and mother."

I am reminded of a story I read recently in one of my daily devotional books. It speaks of this very subject - the family of God:

Billy was attending his first day of jr high. An opening assembly introduced all the homeroom teachers. Miss Smith was introduced first. She was an 'easy' teach, so all of the kids cheered. Mr. Brown also met with thundering approval. But Mr. Johnson was known to be a very strict disciplinarian. As the jeers cascaded down on him, the pain was so evident on his face.

This scene was just so devastating to the brand-new seventh grader, so suddenly Billy stood up in the middle of the bleachers and shouted: "BE QUIET! That's my father!" Instantly, the booing stopped.

After school, Billy went home, and when he saw his father, he began to cry. "Dad today I told a lie at school." Billy confessed to his father how he had yelled at the other kids and told them to be nice to Mr. Johnson. Billy's father said to him, "It's alright son, You just got the family members mixed up. Mr. Johnson's not your father -He is your brother!"
What a great example and reminder to us that in God's family - we are all brothers and sisters. Not only are we to invest in each other but we are to build one another up. In the family of God, when one of us hurts, we all hurt. In the story of Billy - he may not have gone about it in the right way but we see that he had the right concept of this idea of the family of God. That is ~ when our Christian brothers and sisters are suffering or in pain - we are to do everything we can to help them out.

I am so thankful that I belong to a family of God just like that! I am thankful for my church family, my Christian friends, my encouraging blogging friends and all of my prayer partners ... whom all invest and build me up. THANK YOU.

Please join IRIS as she leads us in THANKFUL THURSDAY. Click HERE and read about other grateful hearts today. In ALL things give thanks!

WEDNESDAYS WEEKLY WORD...working with purpose

In the book of Proverbs, Solomon gives us a picture of the lazy life (Prov. 24:30-34), if I could give a description of this passage it would go something like this:

"I went to the house of the slacker, and his gutters were falling off the house. His driveway was filled with weeds as high as my waist. And someone had written in the dirt on the back window of his car: 'Wash Me!' "

The picture I paint of the lazy life is an extreme view, but not far off the mark. Laziness means we are not taking work seriously because of a lack of purpose. Laziness opposes the very nature of humankind, we were made to work as in the Garden of Eden.

GENESIS 2:15 "The Lord God took the man and placed him in the garden of Eden to work it and watch over it."

Many believe that the fall of Adam and Eve brought the curse of working, quite the contrary, the curse was not that we would have to work but the curse was that working would become difficult. After Adam and Eve disobeyed God, work became full of frustrations. Yet, even in a world filled with dead ends and disappointments, our true glory can shine through our work. We should all work with a purpose in mind.

Do you work with someone who is a "slacker". Someone who instead of working diligently, complains that they have not been given a fair shake.

  • They want respect.
  • They want a promotion.
  • They want job security.
But, somehow they just cannot find it because instead of working they spend all of their time talking about how unfair their boss is and how they deserve better.

PROVERBS 13:4 "The soul of a lazy man desires, and has nothing; but the soul of the diligent shall be made rich."

WORKING WITH A PURPOSE
Those who work skillfully and efficiently have a purpose. Hard work without a plan can be wasted effort. Proverbs says that when you build a house, first prepare the ground and the field where you will plant your crop. (Prov. 24:27) In other words, have your future sustainable and your preparations made before you worry about comfort.

In last week's YOUR OPINION MATTERS POLL, I asked my readers the following question: "How would the person closest to you describe you?" The top 3 responses were:

1. 46% of those voting said they would be described as a WEB-AHOLIC.
2. 26% said they would be described as WORK-AHOLICS.
3. 13% voted and said they would be described as a FRIEND-AHOLIC.

Many of us would describe ourselves as WORKAHOLICS. Here are 2 kinds of people who fall into this category of being a workaholic:

First, there are people who work long hours and spend very little time with family, missing out on enjoying life. Yet, during working hours - they are unorganized and easily distracted. Chatting with co-workers combined with their lack of organization and efficiency causes them to not get their 8 hours of work done in 8 hours. Therefore they have to work longer, (not necessarily harder). Working longer hours will make it seem like they are a workaholic.

The second type of a workaholic person would be those people who work extremely hard but spend little time thinking about their careers. They do not take advantage of a little training or even moving to another company that may benefit their career. These type of workaholics find it easier to keep things the way they are. They work hard but get nowhere. This type of person will work far harder and get less results without a plan.

Working hard (or not working hard) is an attitude. For the lazy worker - it is an attitude. The lazy worker has a motto and it goes like this: "if it ain't broke, why fix it?" Solomon speaks about this attitude in the book of Proverbs.

PROVERBS 12:27 "The lazy man does not roast what he took in hunting, but diligence is man's precious possession."

Solomon is telling us that hard workers take care of their possessions. They put extra effort in keeping their tools sharp, their homes repaired and their future bright. The attitude of laziness and cutting corners is a thorn.

Working hard and patience usually bring good things to life. God would not want our total focus to be on success or wealth, but, there is a warning that we should heed as workers that God does not desire for us to be lazy.

It is possible to be lazy in many areas of our life, not just at the workplace. It is not wise to work hard at the office but let the house fall apart or it is not wise to keep up with the house and finances but ignore our family and friends. In the book of Proverbs, Solomon is telling us to be diligent in ALL that we do. Diligence is not just sweat and hard work, it is also balancing and prioritizing with a purpose in mind.

  • WHAT IS YOUR PURPOSE WHEN IT COMES TO WORKING?
  • DO YOU HAVE A GOD-GIVEN VISION FOR YOUR MINISTRY?
  • DO OTHERS SEE YOU WORKING DILIGENTLY?
Tony was sitting in the local Starbucks, drinking a coffee and studying for his sermon later that week. Behind the counter, sat the clerk on a stool. She was deep in the book she was reading. The stool faced the corner, with her back to the front door - she did not notice the young lady that came in. She continued to read her book while yet another customer came in. They did not want to interrupt her reading but how could they get her attention. The young lady tried to do a not-so-obvious cough to get the clerks attention. No prevail. In through the door came a third person, who called out , "I'm here for an interview". Finally, a head bobbed up from the book. As the two of them made their way over to the table next to Tony's, Tony noticed the tag on the lady who was so engrossed in her book, it said "Manager". Tony could not help but overhear the conversation that transpired as the Manager interviewed the candidate:

"Working here can be very busy at times. You will have 4 or 5 customers at the counter at one time, you have to be quick on your feet and always ready to serve the customer."

As leaders, we cannot expect people to do things that we will not do first. Our God-given visions for the people we lead will be meaningless if we don't lead by example. Let's take ownership of the vision that we communicate to others and show it by the way we live. If our vision is evidenced by who we are, who we're becoming, and what we're doing, then others will be much more likely to follow. They will follow more joyfully and more diligently!

I am studying the book of PROVERBS, and this is my Mid Week devotion. It is my prayer that you will be challenged by the Word of God today. If you feel like it is difficult to stay focused on your purpose (or vision) - try making a chart and list all the areas of your life such as family, friends, work, church, recreation - write down the amount of time you spend in each category. After reviewing where you spend your time, ask God to help you to find balance in your life.

THIS WEEKS POLL...
Please take time to vote in this week's poll. It is located on the side bar of this blog. YOUR OPINION MATTERS!
